Vignette Quilts

There are times when I delight in “creating small.” It is a refreshing way to shift gears and change focus after the long process of completing a larger, complex wall quilt.

Working at a reduced scale gives me new opportunities and challenges. Of course, I can happily accomplish more in a shorter period of time! I also can call up images I have long held in the back of my mind, especially ones from Monhegan Island, and bring more of these memories to life. Occasionally, I can choose to render the same image or idea in different ways or from other perspectives. All this, as I continue to wrestle with how to develop just enough detail to capture a singular moment in time.

These finished pieces, which I call “vignette quilts,” give me great pleasure, becoming a new way for me to celebrate many small wonders in my life.
